History

The history of the Bronx goes back to pre-European settlements when native tribes were living in the region for thousands of years. The colonization first began in 1639. The name “Bronx” comes from Jonas Bronck, who created the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony. Part of Westchester County, the Bronx was divided into two different parts, west and east, in 1874 and 1895 respectively when it was ceded to New York County. It was not long after that it became Bronx County, which is the same size as the borough.

Because of its unique location, straddling New England on the west and New York or Manhattan on the east, there was considerable issue over the bridges that connected the island to the mainland. That connection finally brought in the Bronx to Manhattan and New York City proper. Since the 18th century, the Bronx has enjoyed considerable growth thanks to its unique location.

Bronx Today

Over the past 20 years, the Bronx has managed to climb out of the recession that hit the borough hard in the mid to late 1970s. Today, there is considerable growth both in terms of residents and businesses that has managed to revitalize the area. For the third-most populated county in the US, about a quarter of the Bronx consists of open space thanks to land that was placed in reserve during the late 19th century.

The Bronx is also the home to Yankee Stadium, Bronx Zoo, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York Botanical Garden, and many other attractions that brings people to the region on a daily basis. The future certainly looks bright for one of the most celebrated boroughs and counties in the US, thanks in large part to its rich history and proud population.
